Walpole's letters to Sir Horace Mann, 1833.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a draft, with many corrections, of an essay on Walpole's character and writing style, particularly as extrapolated from the publication of his letters to Horace Mann in 1833. Though the author criticizes Walpole's artifices and inconsistencies, he expresses admiration for Walpole's ability to amuse his reader. He also acknowledges the contribution to English history which the letters provide, as they cover the last 20 years of the reign of George II, and goes on to analyze the political career of Sir Robert Walpole during this period. The manuscript also contains a note by Macvey Napier which reads, "Keep the Ms as clean as possible." Bound in with the manuscript are two engravings of Macaulay and one of Horace Walpole; an envelope with Macaulay's signature, dated 1833 and addressed to Macvey Napier; a letter from Napier praising the manuscript draft of Macaulay's essay; and a printed notice of the death of Napier.
